IPL Hair Reduction
IPL (Intense Pulsed Light) Hair Reduction
therapy works on all skin types and most hair
colours to permanently reduce the growth of unwanted
hair. Mulberry House was the first to provide
IPL hair reduction in Scotland in 2001, and it
has rapidly become an exceptionally popular treatment
with men and women of all ages. Treatment times
have now been significantly reduced thanks to
the introduction of a new larger applicator (see
Treatment Process below).
Traditionally, light based hair depilation systems
have been associated with lasers. As technology
has progressed, research has shown that Intense
Pulsed Light (IPL) systems are regularly producing
better results than other systems. IPL systems are
non-laser, emitting light across a broader range
of wavelengths, which are absorbed by the hair's
melanin.
The IPL treatment provided by Skin Solutions
at Mulberry House is designed such that each light
pulse is actually composed of a number of rapid
shorter pulses. These 'multi-pulses' ensure a
more controlled heating of the target hair, whilst
minimising heating of the surrounding skin. This
means that a greater range of skin and hair types
can be treated effectively and safely than was
previously possible.
The way IPL works is to rapidly emit pulses of
light. These are absorbed by the melanin of the
hair, causing it to heat up rapidly and transfer
the heat to adjacent growth cells which in turn
reach a temperature in excess of 70c. At this
temperature the growth cells become permanently
inactive and the follicle is unable to support
future hair growth.
The ideal client will have dark hair and light
skin, but due to the pulsed nature of our IPL
system, darker skin types can also be treated
safely. All hair thickness can also be treated
successfully, from fine hair on the upper lip
to thick hairs of the pubic region.
Our IPL successfully treats all hair colours with
the exception of grey and white. However, these
hair colours can be very effectively treated by
our Epil Pro system.
Once your hair and skin parameters have been determined
to ensure safe and effective treatment, your first
session can begin. The area to be treated will
be prepared and the applicator head will be stepped
across the skin and each flash will result in
an area of 10mm x 50mm being treated.
Skin Solutions at Mulberry House is one of
the very few establishments using a larger applicator
to treat larger areas. The huge advantage in this
is the reduced time needed for treatments. Previously,
having lower legs treated would mean being in
the clinic for almost 2 hours. Now with the 22cm
applicator you can be in and out in around 45
minutes. This applicator is excellent for treating
all larger areas - backs, chests, etc.
Sensible use of sun protection products is all
that is needed as direct exposure to sunlight
should be avoided for up to four weeks before
and after treatment. Treated hair should be left
in place for at least four days, after which they
can be removed or allowed to fall out naturally.
Unlike many laser treatments, the hairs are not
vaporised but appear to grow out slowly and after
1 to 3 weeks they will fall out naturally. The
area will remain hair-free until the next growth
cycle - the duration will depend on the area being
treated and on the individual. The next treatment
will remove this growth. Subsequent treatments
will be required until the area is completely
hair-free.
With its generously sized 22cm applicator head,
treatment using IPL is very fast. Facial areas
can be treated in a matter of minutes whilst larger
areas can be treated in around an hour. Typically
four to seven treatments will be sufficient to
significantly reduce hair density.
Hair depilation using Intense Pulsed Light is
one of the safest techniques available. There
is little if any down-time with this treatment.
The sensation felt during treatment will be no
more than gentle pressure on the skin from the
applicator along with a short mild heat sensation
as the individual follicles are heated.
